The Grand Seiko SLGB003 UFA
It seems that Grand Seiko has finally listened to their enthusiasts and came up with something many have wanted. They didn’t just listen to us, but they also innovated and gave us more than we expected, with the new Grand Seiko SLGB003.
What many complained about was the fact that if you wanted a smaller case you had to either pick up one of their manual winding or quartz watches, missing out on their crown jewel spring drive movement. Taking 8 years to develop this new movement. The new movement that Grand Seiko has developed, the 9RB2 is smaller, thinner, and even more accurate. The accuracy of a movement is usually measured by how many seconds a day the watch gains or loses, but when it comes to the spring drive movement it’s measured in how many seconds the watch loses in a month. In the case of the new 9RB2 the watch loses +/- 3 seconds a month. To make things even clearer, a COSC certified movement, which is something that many watch enthusiasts look for in their watches, the movement needs to be +/- 4-6 seconds a day. Meaning the 9RB2 is 91% more accurate than any COSC certified watch. All this while still having a power reserve of 72 hours. That is why the movement is called the Ultra Fine Accuracy (UFA) and it is probably the most accurate watch that has a mainspring.
With the movement being smaller than its predecessor the 9RA2, that means the case is smaller. The SLGB003 has a case size of 37mm, a thickness of 11.4mm, and a lug to lug of 44.3mm, making this watch many Grand Seiko lovers extremely happy. Why you may ask? Well not everyone is blessed with a wrist that can fit the Grand Seiko Snowflake or the Kira Zuri that I previously owned. The case and the bracelet are made from high-intensity grade 5 titanium, making the watch extremely light. Staying true to its Grand Seiko DNA, the Zuratsu polishing is still used on the case’s and the bezel’s edges. The watch being more of a sports watch therefore it has the Evolution 9 case. When you flip the watch over you will notice that the SLGB003 has an open caseback which shows the true beauty of the 9RB2 movement, and the power reserve indicator, which many wanted to be off the dial so it would give the Grand Seiko Dials a cleaner and more symmetrical look.

Grand Seiko is renowned for their beautiful dial designs which take inspiration from nature. The SLGB003 takes its inspiration from the extremely frigid winters in the Shinshu region in Japan. The dial resembles the frozen icy forest that can be seen outside the Grand Seiko Watch Studio in the Shinshu region. Textured to look like the tips of the frozen treetops, the dial changes when the light hits it, and changes more when the angle of the light changes, giving off sliver at times, and light blue at other times. The applied polished trapezoid indices are typical Grand Seiko, so are the hour and minute hands that are also polished with the blue seconds hand gliding smoother than anything you ever seen. The date window is located at the 3 o’clock with a polished frame outlining the date window.
Something else that many people, including me have begged for has finally made it to the Grand Seiko line, and that’s micro adjustment on their bracelets. I know right, it’s 2026 and we are jumping up and down because of micro adjustment, but it’s something that a lot of people have truly wanted, removing links to get the right fitment doesn’t always work. The butterfly clasp is bigger than any of the previous bracelet clasps but that’s because it’s hiding Grand Seiko’s micro adjustment mechanism, which gives the wearer the ability to adjust the watch up to 6mm without removing any links. When you press the button inside the clasp you can adjust your fitment with 2mm increments, no tools needed. The SLGB003 and the new diver that Grand Seiko announced at Watches and Wonders 2026 the SLGB023 are the only two watches with the micro adjustments, and the only watches with the new 9RB2 UFA movement, that you can currently buy.

So, did Grand Seiko hit it out of the park and make something that enthusiasts and have wanted? HELL YES! Perfect case size? Check! Amazing accuracy? Check! Beautiful dial? Check! Micro adjustment? Check! This watch is priced higher than most Spring Drive watches, but that’s because of all the changes this watch has. I love this watch and when I saw that one was up for sale, I actually put up two of my Grand Seiko’s, the Kira Zuri and the White Birch, for sale so I can pick it up, because it solves a lot of issues I had with Grand Seiko. Granted these issues were not major and not things that would bother me, but they still were things I wished for.
